Nathan Northrup

Tenor Nathan Northrup received his Bachelor of Music from Brigham Young University in 2001, where he studied under Dr. Clayne Robison, and learned under the teaching of Dr. Arden Hopkin, Lawrence Vincent and others. He completed his Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance at the University of Michigan in 2003, studying under tenors Randall Reid-Smith and Douglas Ahlstedt and working with renowned singers such as Shirley Verrett and George Shirley. During his time in college, he sang lead roles such as Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata, Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, and Don Ramiro in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, among others.

From 2004 – 2015 Mr. Northrup lived and worked in Wuppertal, Germany as a first tenor in the opera chorus of the Wuppertaler Bühnen (Wuppertal Stages) theater. In experiences uncommon for chorus singers, he was selected to sing lead roles such as Ernesto in Don Pasquale and Nemorino in L’elisir d’Amore, both by Donizetti, and Count Almaviva in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, as well as numerous other roles. He sang as a guest soloist in other theaters throughout Germany. He was known for both his musical and stage abilities, and for being easy to work with.

Demonstrative of the theater’s trust in him, he was called one Saturday afternoon and asked if he would replace a tenor who was ill for that evening’s performance of Mozart’s La finta giardiniera. As he was not familiar with the opera, he was asked to sight-read the role of Don Anchise from the side of the stage, which he did with success.

Mr. Northrup regularly sang tenor solos in oratorio concerts throughout Northrhine-Westphalia, including the Evangelist roles in Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and his St. John- and St. Matthew-Passions. He also sang several concerts and projects with the Duisburg Philharmonic, the Beethoven Orchester Bonn, and the Wuppertal Symphony. In performance with the Symphony Orchestra of the Philharmonic Society of Düsseldorf, he sang such roles as Rosillon in Lehar’s The Merry Widow and Orpheus in Gluck’s Orpheus und Eurydike. He is one of the founding members of the ensemble Von Perotin bis Pärt, a group of four male singers and up to six instrumentalists, performing an array of 900 years of spiritual music in churches throughout the Cologne, Germany area.

He has enjoyed teaching individuals and occasional classes over the years and is very excited to be part of the faculty at Hammer and Strings. Nathan now resides in Queen Creek, Arizona with his wife, Giovanna and four of their five children.
