A music conservatory is a school focused on advanced, pre-professional-caliber training for serious musicians, with individualized instruction from specialized faculty, performance-grade instruments, recital programs, and preparation for competitions, auditions, and university programs. Hammer & Strings Conservatory offers conservatory-level training for students across the entire East Valley.
Every Conservatory student’s primary program is weekly private instruction with a specialist in their instrument. 30, 45, or 60-minute sessions. Lesson length scales with student level, beginners often start at 30 minutes and expand as repertoire grows.

Every Conservatory student lands on one of three tracks. The track sets the expectation, practice time, performance commitment, parent involvement, and can be changed by mutual agreement with the teacher as the student grows.
Lessons are for fun. No practice-time minimums, no required performances, no competition expectations. Students show up, learn, enjoy themselves, and leave.
Best for younger beginners, busy adults, and anyone returning to music after a break.
Most students are here. Weekly private lessons, regular practice expectations, recitals twice a year, and a full musical education, technique, theory, repertoire, and ensemble.
Best for committed students of any age who want to learn to play well, perform regularly, and grow steadily.
For students preparing for regional and state competitions (EVMTA, ASTA, MTNA), summer festival auditions, or college music programs. Extended lesson time, quarterly mock auditions, and dedicated repertoire planning.
Add-on tuition: $25/month. Available to students who’ve demonstrated the practice habits and ambition the track requires.
Most private teachers can’t give a student what a chamber ensemble gives them: the musical muscle of listening to multiple other players in real time, the accountability of showing up prepared for a rehearsal that isn’t yours, the unforgettable experience of a performance that depends on the whole group.
Our chamber program places students into coached ensembles matched by level and instrumentation, piano trios, string quartets, mixed chamber, vocal ensembles. Coaches are drawn from the Conservatory faculty.

Our summer intensive weeks run in June and July. Each week is built around a single instrument or skill (solo piano, string chamber, vocal performance, composition). Half-day schedule, morning through early afternoon, with a closing recital on the fifth day.
Open to: Current Conservatory students and external applicants by audition.

Most instruments welcome students at age 5 or 6, pending a short readiness evaluation. Voice students typically start later (8+). For the youngest learners, we start with 30-minute lessons and scale up as focus grows.
For most instruments, yes, and we’ll advise you on what to buy (or rent) during the consultation. For piano, a quality acoustic or high-end digital (weighted keys, minimum 88 keys) is required for home practice. We do not recommend keyboards under 88 keys.
Beginners: 15-30 minutes daily. Intermediate: 45-60 minutes daily. Conservatory Track: 2+ hours daily. Students who don’t practice consistently don’t progress, and we’re direct with families about that.
Yes. Adult learners, returning players and beginners alike, are welcome in private instruction and in chamber programs that match their level.
